When Timothy George Kemp stepped onto the platform at Waratah Railway Station on May 12 last year, a bag containing condoms and personal lubricant in tow, it wasn’t detectives from the state’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad he was expecting to find.
Just two hours earlier the Telarah man had confirmed plans to meet for sex with who he thought was a 13-year-old girl he’d been grooming online for over two months.
The police sting and Kemp’s revolting messages to the fictitious teen have been revealed in court documents, after the 36-year-old pleaded guilty in December to using a carriage service to procure a person under 16 for sexual activity, and using a carriage service to send indecent material.
In a brief mention in the District Court at Newcastle on Thursday, Kemp’s matter was set for sentencing on April 9 – a year on from his online fling with the supposed underage girl.
Police from child abuse-focused Strike Force Trawler made first contact with Kemp, sending him a friend request from the Facebook profile of the fictitious girl on March 3.
Just two days later Kemp and ‘the girl’ had their first conversation via Facebook Messenger, in which the two shared their ages and the girl told Kemp of her limited sexual history.
“The offender said to (the girl) ‘maybe I should be your teacher as (sic) sex education’,” the court documents revealed.
“I’ll even show you how to put a condom on a banana.
“Unless you wanna put one on mine.”
Kemp sent the girl graphic messages about sex acts he wanted to perform on her, before sending her a picture of himself and asking if she used the application Snapchat.
Police, acting as the girl, asked him to add her on Skype instead.
The graphic sexual conversation continued via Skype messages, with Kemp telling the girl he’d use a condom with her so she doesn’t get pregnant.
“Delete the messages so (your mother) won’t know,” he instructed her.
On March 10 Kemp and the girl discussed becoming boyfriend and girlfriend.
“We can’t be,” he told her. “‘Cause I’m 36 and you’re 13.”
But that didn’t stop him from continuing the conversation, and sending the girl an explicit video of himself.
The online conversations went on for weeks, with Kemp detailing sex acts and asking her to send him photos of herself.
On May 4, two months after connecting, the two discussed meeting for the first time.
“The offender informed (the girl) that he will meet her at Waratah Railway Station,” the documents said.
“The offender said to (the girl) ‘this will have to stay between us’.
“‘I’ve never had sex with a virgin before.’”
Four days later he told the girl he was serving a two-year good behaviour bond and was worried about meeting her and being sent to jail.
“The offender stated ‘I’m 36 and you’re 13’ … ‘means I’ll be a pedo’.
“The offender further stated ‘I can teach you how to kiss, etc.’”
On May 12 about 8am, after Kemp told the girl he was “heaps drunk”, the pair finally locked in plans to meet.
He boarded a train from Telarah, arriving at Waratah and into police custody at 10.12am.
Kemp remains on bail while he awaits sentencing.
He faces up to 15 years behind bars.
