Smoke alarms sounded from the Valentia Pde residence around 2pm.

Neighbours, including two home care workers, guided the 80-year-old woman to safety as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Local crews from East Maitland, Maitland, Tarro, and Morpeth arrived and immediately switched off the home’s power.

Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters then used a fire extinguisher to douse the oven blaze.

They ventilated the home as the woman’s daughter, a registered nurse, cared for her mother at the scene.

Fire crews said if was not for the working smoke alarms, the fire’s impact could have a lot more significant.
