A teenage learner driver has died and three other people have been hospitalised following a horror two-vehicle crash in the Hunter.

Emergency services were called to John Renshaw Drive at Black Hill, east of Kurri Kurri, about 9pm on Tuesday following reports of a crash.

Police said Hunter Valley officers arrived to find a Holden Commodore and a Ford utility had collided.

A police statement said the 17-year-old male learner driver of the Holden died at the scene.

The rear passenger of the Commodore – also a 17-year-old boy – was treated at the scene by paramedics before being flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.

The Holden’s front passenger – a 56-year-old man – was also treated at the scene and taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

The driver of the utility – a 62-year-old woman – was treated for minor injuries and taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

Police have established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the cause of the crash.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
