It’s hoped a prettier, leafier main street would attract more shoppers to Stockton.
The number of trees along Mitchell St would jump from three to 40 under plans to beautify the strip.
The $3.3m upgrade would also see new street furniture, footpaths and improved drainage.
The speed limit would be reduced to 40km/h to make the street more pedestrian friendly.
Newcastle City Council unveiled artists impressions of the upgrade, set to start early next year.
“A key feature of this upgrade is the significant increase in street trees which will provide much needed shade and add to the colour and character of this important shopping and business centre,” lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.
“Local businesses will be able to take advantage of shade for streetside dining, and shoppers will have a more pleasant place to spend time or catch up with friends.”
The upgrade is part of a $116m program to improve hubs across the region, including Carrington, Kotara and New Lambton.
The Mitchell St plans will be on display for two weeks for community feedback.
“We’re now inviting the community to view the plans on our website or in Stockton Library and let us know their thoughts before starting construction in the New Year.”
The plans can be viewed on the council website.
