Several flood warnings for the Upper Hunter have been issued after huge downpours fill up river systems

The SES continues to monitor the Upper Hunter’s swollen river systems as several homes and a police station were inundated.

Flood warnings issued as NSW and Queensland brace for more wild weather

The State Emergency Service continued to monitor river levels on Friday and have postponed any decisions on possible evacuations after huge squalls poured massive amounts of water into the Upper Hunter’s river systems.

Several homes and the local police station at Cassilis, in the far western reaches of the Upper Hunter, were inundated with water on Friday morning.

No one was injured.

The same overnight weather system also put pressure on the catchments around Merriwa and Scone.

Superintendent Graeme Craig, from the State Emergency Service’s northern zone, said the amount of water flowing into the river systems was difficult to predict because the rain fell in areas without gauges.

The river rose from 0.5m at 5am on Friday to just under 3.8m at noon before stabilising.

Concerns about low lying areas downstream prompted a major flood warning along parts of Kingdon Ponds.

The stabilising of the river levels allowed the SES time to continue monitoring the situation before any evacuation orders were made.

There had been three swift water rescues in the Scone and Aberdeen areas – two rescues after people got into trouble after driving into floodwaters as well as a woman who was isolated by rising floodwaters around her house.

There have been no reports of injuries.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported on Friday that minor flooding was likely along the Upper Hunter River at Muswellbrook on Friday afternoon and at Denman overnight on Friday and into Saturday.

The Hunter River at Muswellbrook was likely to reach minor flood levels on Friday afternoon and further rises were possible.

There is a long list of road closures, which can be found on the Live Traffic website.

Supt Craig said the forecast suggested the squalls would be easing on Friday afternoon, however the flood concerns would continue as water continued to flow into catchments and downstream.
