Raptor Squad investigate links between attempted raid on Trevor Fing’s Belmont North home and shooting of a bikie

The state’s Raptor Squad is investigating links between a botched home invasion at the residence of a wheelchair-bound convicted criminal and the admission of a senior bikie to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound.

The state’s anti-bikie squad is investigating whether the mysterious admission of a Sydney-based bikie with a gunshot wound at a Lake Macquarie hospital has any links with the botched home invasion at a premises belonging to a well-known and wheelchair-bound convicted criminal.

Former jailbird Trevor Fing says he woke to find six masked men outside the front door of his Belmont North home early on February 23, before hearing what he believed could have been a gunshot and a front window shattering.

Fing, who lost an arm and a leg in a hit-an-run accident in 2014 and was in the house with his wife and adult son, said the men then ran off, knocking pot plants over and clambering over his front gate before jumping into a vehicle and taking off.

He said he had no idea who would have targeted his family, had still not heard if anyone had been shot and suggested the would-be intruders may have been after some expensive cars.

He said there was blood at his front gate and he believed someone may have hurt themselves as they climbed over it to escape.

The Fings rang triple-0 and police quickly arrived, with detectives successfully applying for a crime scene warrant before taking over the house for several days.

Fing, who said he had been crime-free for two decades, claims his family could not return until Tuesday and went without medication and other needs.

He said police took electronic equipment, like laptops and mobiles, as well as security footage before upturning and damaging beds, tearing through lounges, removing mirrors from walls and pulling out power switches.

“We are the victims in this – I get the cops don’t like us but you have to treat the victims with some sort of respect,” Fing told this masthead the day after the family got their home back.

The Belmont North home has been the subject of several police operations over the past two decades, including a raid when Trevor Fing was arrested over a $1.7m fraud two decades ago and again when heavily-armed police raided it in 2013.

Fing later confirmed it was also the subject of a raid by counter-terrorism police late last year after another son, Daniel Fing, was arrested on drug charges.

Daniel Fing has been charged with serious drug supply charges after being arrested by counter-terrorism police in November last year. His father, Trevor, said that prompted another raid on the family home.

Those charges are still in front of the courts and Daniel Fing has not been required to enter any pleas.

But Fing said the damage to his house during the recent crime scene warrant was “over the top”, had left his elderly wife shaken and he was speaking with his lawyers about what action to take.

The Raptor Squad has taken over the investigation.

That investigation will also include how a Sydney-based bikie was dropped off at Belmont Hospital shortly after the alleged raid on the Fings home with an apparent gunshot wound.

The bikie, understood to be a high-ranking member of a gang, was initially listed as being in a critical condition when he was rushed to another hospital for surgery.

His condition on Thursday was not immediately known although his injuries were now not considered life threatening.

Police confirmed they were called to the Marian Pl house about 1.50am on February 23 and were told “a number of unknown people had attempted to break into the address”.

“There were also reports of a gunshot or gunshots being heard,” police said in a statement issued last week.

A further statement to this masthead this week added: “State Crime Command’s Raptor Squad are currently investigating potential links between a home invasion in Belmont North, and a 38-year-old man admitted to hospital the same evening with a gunshot wound.”

Police were also quick to silence rumblings through sections of Newcastle’s criminal underbelly that the attempted home invasion was a sign that bikie-related crime was again on the rise in the Hunter.

“This particular matter is being treated as an isolated incident, and there is no evidence to suggest an escalation of violence linked to [outlaw motorcycle gangs] in the Lake Macquarie area,” a statement to this masthead said.

“We are unable to make further comment given the investigation is ongoing.”

There is no suggestion any members of the Fing family have close associations with bikie gangs.
