A pregnant woman and her nursing colleague have escaped a horrifying attempted early morning carjacking in suburban Newcastle which only stopped when the would-be attacker slid off the bonnet of the women’s car after being carried several hundred metres.
Elisa Gummow, 31, believes her suspicions of a barefoot man wearing a hooded jumper as she waited to pick up a workmate en route to their jobs at John Hunter Hospital on Monday morning allowed her to foil his attack by locking all the doors of her car before he swooped.
As her colleague got into the front seat of Ms Gummow’s car on Nelson St about 6.30am, the suspect attempted to also get inside the car and yelled at the pair before climbing onto the bonnet of the vehicle.
Scared and in shock, Ms Gummow took off, crashed into a parked car and continued up to 500 metres with the man still clinging to the bonnet of the car.
She stopped the car in Kokera St, near McDonalds, and the suspect fled.
“He was on the bonnet, clinging on and still yelling at them until he decided to jump and run off,” Ms Gummow’s partner Aaron Wivell told The Newcastle News.
“She is okay but it was terrifying for them.”
Mr Wivell said his partner was 15 weeks’ pregnant with their second child.
The suspect was described as being 170cm-175cm tall, of thin build and pale complexion and was wearing the black hooded jumper, a pair of black, three-quarter length pants and no shoes.
The couple have spoken to Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery about the incident and has asked for members of the public to check for security or dashcam footage of the incident.
A police spokesman confirmed an investigation of the “intimidation incident” was underway.
Information should be forwarded to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
