Newcastle shooting: Woman, 61, shot dead after answering front door of Stockton home

Forensic police are fingerprinting the exterior of a Stockton home after a woman who answered its door was shot dead.

A specially-formed strike force is looking for a killer after a woman was shot dead at Newcastle overnight.

Emergency services were called to a home at Queen St, Stockton about 8pm, to reports of a shooting.

A woman, believed to be aged 61 but yet to be formally identified, was found dead at the scene.

Police believe she was shot after answering the front door.

Forensic police are examining the scene and Strike Force Backhouse has been established to investigate the incident.

Witnesses reported hearing a gun shot followed by the sound of a car “speeding off”.

Four ambulances, 12 police vehicles and a police helicopter attended the scene, with Queen St cordoned off. Nearby residents were initially advised to stay in their homes.

The death is being treated as a homicide.

Anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage of the area, is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
