A popular Newcastle barber has moved just down the road to make way for an almost $4.5 million development on one of the city’s busiest streets.

The owner of Neighbourhood Barber on Beaumont St, Islington, said they welcomed plans for a multimillion-dollar shop-top housing complex and a new bakery housed at their old shop, which they had previously rented.

The Trustee for Parker Super Fund recently lodged a development application with Newcastle City Council to transform the old building – numbers 11, 13 and 15 – into brand new apartments at one of the city’s highly sought-after and busy addresses.

The plans include more than 10 studio, one- and two-bedroom units over four storeys, and the barber shop to be converted into a stylish bakery.

“I’m really looking forward to the future of Islington with the plans for the community,” Neighbourhood Barber’s owner said.

“I think the area will benefit a lot.

“I can’t wait to grab a coffee and pastry in the new bakery.”

Surrounded by a mix of retail, restaurants, cafes and pubs – including the heritage listed Regent Theatre – currently the height of local buildings is not more than three storeys.

Plans for this development exceed the height of building provisions within Newcastle’s Local Environment Plan, which developers will try to have changed in a bid to get the proposal off the ground.

But planners have supported the plans and said it was a win for the local community.

“The proposal is consistent with the regional and local strategies,” they said.

“Overall, it is considered that the proposal will not have any significant environmental impact resulting from the development, it is permissible with consent and will not jeopardise the public interest.

“There is no reason as to why the approval of the development should not be supported.”

The proposed development is currently on public exhibition until May 18 for feedback and submissions.
