A mystery bag of fishing gear found on a Lake Macquarie headland has sparked an air and sea search amid concerns the owner may have been washed off rocks.
The bag was found on a rock platform at the southern end of Dudley Beach about 7.20am on Thursday, prompting authorities to call in resources to search the area.
Water police were joined by marine rescue, PolAir and lifesavers in a wide search of the area and nothing was found.
It remains unknown whether the grey bag, found near the Bombala St track and Cross Creek, was inadvertently left by a fisherman or whether someone had got into difficulty.
“While the items may have been discarded or lost, police hold concerns for the welfare of the potential owner and are appealing for anyone who has information on the owner of the items to contact local police,” police said in a statement.
“As inquiries continue, anyone with information about the items found is urged to contact Lake Macquarie Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
