Modus Brewing create world first AI generated beer, ‘Neural Network’

A NSW brewer has placed the fate of their latest drop in the hands of artifical intelligence – creating the world’s first AI generated beer.

A popular NSW brewer has put the challenge to artificial intelligence to design the world’s best and most unique beer, and they think they’ve done it.

Champion Independent Brewer, Modus Brewing, located in Newcastle and the Northern Beaches in Sydney, has partnered with Absolutely A.i., to create the a refreshing new beverage designed entirely by artificial intelligence.

Founder Grant Wearin said they wanted to “explore the phenomenon” by putting the fun element into the ground breaking technology.

“The beer is just excellent,” he said.

“The brewers looked at the ingredient list and looked at each other and went wow, this is a phenomenal recipe.”

The limited release beer, named “Neural Network” is completely designed by A.i. from top to bottom including recipe, label design, name, and tasting notes.

The AI algorithm produced a proposed recipe from its understanding of what makes the perfect East Coast IPA based on hundreds of thousands of beer reviews, what people think of particular beers and what styles.

There was only one ingredient Modus Brewery didn’t include.

“The preservative and that was because Modus never includes it in their beers, we’re completely preservative free,” Mr Wearin said.

“Other than that the whole thing is designed by the AI algorithm.”

Mr Wearin described their newly created beer as a precursor to the ‘hazey’, with low bitterness, highly aromatic and a body full of flavour.

“(It) has sweet, malt balancing out huge hop aroma containing grapefruit notes, orange notes and passionfruit,” he explained.

“You get this real tropical aromatic balanced out, it’s very easy to drink, almost dangerous to drink.

“That we’re aware of, no other brewer has partnered with an AI company to generate the whole beer from start to finish.”

Mr Wearin said while it’s an amazing creation and will surely lead the way in other brewers following suit, it will never replace the traditional way of beer making and those who craft the top drops.

“I don’t think it replaces brewers,” he added.

“For sensory and experience elements, Modus has some of the best brewers in the country, churning out beers, you can’t replace their sensory excellence and ingredient selection, hand selected all our hops and malt.

“It comes to the fore on the execution of the beer.”

The ‘Neural Network’ beer has now been released on the market and is available across the country.
