Mitch Steel, 25, facing gun and drug charges after car stop
A car stop in suburban Newcastle has allegedly led police to seize drugs and a replica revolver. A 25-year-old man has since faced court.

A man has been remanded in custody after a suburban vehicle stop allegedly led police to discover methamphetamine, heroin, GHB and a replica revolver.
Police said in a statement that officers stopped a vehicle on Hassall St at Hamilton South about 3.50pm on Monday and spoke to the driver “in relation to a firearms prohibition order compliance check”.
“A subsequent search of the driver and vehicle allegedly revealed 11.79g of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, 0.8g of a substance believed to be heroin, and 20g of liquid believed to be gamma-hydroxybutyrate,” the statement said.
The driver – 25-year-old Mitch Steel – was arrested and taken to Newcastle police station.
Police raided a home on Moate St at Georgetown a short time later where they allegedly seized a replica revolver from a bedroom.
Steel was charged with six offences including two counts of possessing a prohibited drug, one count each of supplying a prohibited drug (greater than indictable and less than commercial quantity), firearm etc found at a premises – subject to prohibition order and driving offences.
Steel faced Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday where he was not required to enter any pleas.
Magistrate Ian Cheetham refused Steel bail and he was remanded in custody to reappear on June 5.
