Two people have escaped serious injury after their gyrocopter crashed while attempting to take off in Lake Macquarie on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to Nandor St at Marmong Point, on the north-eastern shoreline of the lake, after reports that the aircraft, which boasted floats, had speared into the water while attempting to take off about 10.25am.

Two people were able to be rescued and were being treated by paramedics although initial reports suggesting they had not been injured.

“Police have been told that the marine aircraft was attempting to take off from the lake when it nosedived into the water, causing the aircraft to roll sideways,” police said in a statement.

“The two occupants of the gyrocopter boat were assisted out of the aircraft by members of the public before being assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

“No injuries have been reported to police as a result of the incident.

“The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has been notified.”

The aircraft had sunk and has been towed to a local marina for further investigation.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said eight appliances had been sent to the scene, including specialist rescue crews.

Hazardouse materials specialists had established booms around the gyrocopter to contain any fuel leak.
