Police are hunting a man who allegedly hurled a knife during a late-night argument at a small town business, landing a workmate in hospital with a severe eye injury.

Emergency services were called to George St, at Morpeth, about 8.45pm on Wednesday after reports a man had sustained an injury.

“On arrival, police were told that two men were involved in an altercation before one of the men allegedly threw a knife at the other before fleeing, causing a serious injury,” police said in a statement.

“NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and assisted a 26-year-old man before taking him to John Hunter Hospital for treatment of an eye injury.”

It is understood the knife stuck in the man’s eye, only for the injured worker to pull it out.

Port Stephens-Hunter police established a crime scene and have commenced inquiries into the incident.

“Inquiries to locate the (alleged assailant) are ongoing; however, the men are believed to be known to each other and there is no ongoing risk to the public,” the police statement said.
