A man has been charged with murder after handing himself in to detectives investigating the shooting death of teenager Ekampreet Sahni at a Newcastle carpark.

The 22-year-old walked into Newcastle police station with solicitor Mark Ramsland before noon on Friday where he was arrested by detectives.

He was charged with murder late on Friday afternoon.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

The development came after 18-year-old Ekam was shot dead as he stood with several other young men in Bar Beach carpark late on Wednesday night.

Police have been hunting those responsible after being told that a man got out of a white Volvo SUV and fired a rifle towards the men.

Strike Force Bolwarra was immediately established with local detectives joined by homicide squad investigators as they attempted to find those responsible for the alleged murder.

A crime scene was established around the popular carpark for most of Thursday as forensic experts gathered clues while a burnt out car was seized from Tingira Heights for further testing.

The alleged murder shocked law enforcement officials, with senior police describing the shooting as “senseless”
