Laurence Robert Stuart Clark refused bail after being accused of biting police officer at Mary Ellen Hotel

A man accused of taking a bite out of a police officer and drawing blood during a chaotic arrest at a popular Newcastle pub has been refused bail.

Laurence Robert Stuart Clark, 27, appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday facing 14 charges including property and traffic offences and assaulting police.

Police were called to a home at Hamilton South early on Tuesday morning following reports of a break and enter.

Officers were told a man entered the Harle St premises and allegedly stole a laptop computer.

Further inquiries led police to the Mary Ellen Hotel a short time later where they caught up with Clark.

Police allege he became aggressive and had to be handcuffed and a search of his bag allegedly revealed the suspected stolen computer.

Police allege it was later uncovered the 27-year-old had links to other break and enters n Merewether, Hamilton and Hamilton South.

After being arrested and while Clark was walked to the police vehicle, he allegedly kicked at officers and bit the hand of one, drawing blood before being sprayed with OC.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with two counts of aggravated break and enter and commit a serious indictable offence, aggravated commit serious indictable offence in dwelling, two counts of commit s114 offence having previous conviction, resist and assault police, give false names/addresses, goods in custody suspected stolen, dishonestly obtain property by deception, larceny and enter building with intent to commit indictable offence.

In court on Tuesday, bail was refused, citing unacceptable risks including committing a serious offence, endangering the safety of victims and failing to appear at proceedings.

Clark’s matters were adjourned for brief status mention on August 13.
