Detectives investigating the kneecapping of a Nomads bikie gang nominee are certain they have found the scene where he was shot – and they believe they know the car used to transport him there.

Specialist police converged on an area on the base of the Watagans, west of Lake Macquarie, on Thursday morning as they ramped up the investigation into the shooting of the wannabe bikie more than four months ago.

Ground zero is a patch of dirt near the intersection of Wakefield and Sugarloaf roads, near Freemans Waterhole – a remote area of bushland which investigators believe was the perfect location for a privately-organised public shooting.

Lake Macquarie detectives have been dogged in their investigation into the kneecapping of the 27-year-old gang nominee – a term used in bikie culture for wannabe gang members on probation – after he was found behind an Edgeworth supermarket on April 8.

The Sydney man was discovered bleeding next to Arnott St – behind the Coles supermarket – about 9.10pm with a single bullet wound which had passed through his lower right thigh and calf.

He has repeatedly refused to speak to detectives, including when they visited him in John Hunter Hospital following surgery.

But his lack of co-operation has not deterred investigators, who believe a 2019 white Toyota Camry was used to transport the man to Freemans Waterhole and then to Edgeworth before dumping him on the street.

They have urged motorists who may have been driving around both areas on April 8 to check their dashcams for footage, while experts have been poring through CCTV vision in and around both crime scenes.

The investigation has led them to the patch of dirt near Freemans Waterhole, with officers searching the area on Thursday morning for any ballistics evidence which could assist the inquiry.

A suspected motive for the shooting has not been publicly released, although it is understood the victim’s bikie links are one significant line of inquiry.

Anyone with information is urged to call Lake Macquarie detectives or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
