Police have made a grim discovery in a backyard pool of a Lake Macquarie home after they pulled a child unresponsive from the water, who was unable to be revived.

Officers were called to a street in Teralba just after 3pm on Thursday after responding to reports a six-year-old-boy was missing.

After frantically searching the area, officers discovered a child at a nearby property, who was found unresponsive in the pool.

Despite efforts by police who immediately commenced CPR and the arrival of paramedics shortly after, the child was unable to be revived.

The child is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be the six-year-old boy.

Police have set up a crime scene following the boys death and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
