Dressed in a smart grey coat, Kye David Campbell approached the court microphone as he told the magistrate he would be representing himself.
The confident looking 22-year-old, freshly released on Supreme Court bail, fronted Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday for a serious charge of supplying nearly a kilogram of methylamphetamine.
Police allege they found 921 grams of ‘ice’ in Campbell’s Audi, packed in 33 plastic bags containing about an ounce in each of the deadly drug.
He pleaded not guilty to the supply charge, while also denied a raft of other charges which included drug possession, police pursuit, possession of a weapon, and possession of unauthorised ammunition.
Police allege Campbell was in the driver’s seat on February 18 when he had been seen near a Thornton industrial estate by police, as they were hunting another man on unrelated matters.
But when they tried to pull him over, police allege he took off which instigated a short pursuit before the 22-year-old was later stopped on the M1 Motorway near Cameron Park.
That’s when officers searched his vehicle and allegedly undercovered the many bags of ice.
Police allege he was also caught with illegal steriods Trenbolone, as well as testosterone and had also been found with nunchucks, an illegal weapon.
On Wednesday, the court heard Campbell had been granted Supreme Court bail on February 9 but had only recently been released.
While he previously had a lawyer, the court heard further negotiations were needed because he wanted to represent himself before he proceeded to plead not guilty to all charges.
Campbell was committed for trial and will be arraigned in Newcastle District Court late next month.
