A jury has acquitted a young man accused of sexually assaulting a woman near a popular Newcastle nightclub.
Jack Milner, now aged 21, was found not guilty on Monday of aggravated sexual assault – inflict actual bodily harm following a week-long trial in Newcastle District Court.
The jury returned with their not guilty verdict on Monday.
Mr Milner had been facing the allegations for almost two years, after Strike Force Molyneaux detectives arrested him at Merewether Heights on December 12, 2022.
Prosecutors had alleged the young woman had been attacked just before midnight on November 25, 2022 after she had been refused entry into Finnegans nightclub on Darby St.
They had alleged Mr Milner had assaulted the woman in a lane out the back of the nightclub.
But defence barrister Margaret Cunneen SC had argued there was no sexual assault and the woman had first approached Mr Milner.
