A man who was found with a pistol, more than two ounces of meth and $18,000 in cash was due to be released from prison on Wednesday to serve the next three years on an intensive corrections order.
Jordan Mitchell, 27, has been banned from taking drugs or drinking alcohol for the three-year order after he was sentenced in Newcastle District Court on Wednesday to a raft of charges laid after a vehicle stop at Heddon Greta last year.
Hunter Valley police stopped Mitchell on Main Road about 12.30pm on May 30 for what officers said was “for the purpose of a vehicle search under a firearms prohibited order”.
Police found the pistol, $18,000 in cash, more than two ounces of methamphetamine and prescription medication.
Mitchell was arrested and charged and remained in custody before being sentenced by Judge Peter Whitford.
On a charge of acquiring a pistol - subject to firearms prohibition order, Mitchell was sentenced to 11 months and 23 days – equal to the time he had spent in custody since his arrest.
He was sentenced to two years and nine months for possessing an unauthorised pistol and 18 months for supplying a prohibited drug.
With partial accumulations – and Judge Whitford taking into account several other charges including dealing in the proceeds of crime, possessing ammunition and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug – Mitchell was sentenced to a total of three years’ jail.
Judge Whitford ordered that the sentence should be served as in intensive correction order in the community.
He placed a number of conditions on the order, including the drug and alcohol ban.
