Johnathan Alex Nean charged after alleged axe-wielding road rage attack at Tomago

Police have arrested a suspect after a manhunt which was launched after reports of a terrifying road rage attack involving a motorist allegedly being threatened with an axe following a crash.

Police have dramatically arrested a suspect after a three-hour manhunt sparked following an alleged road rage incident involving an axe.

Johnathan Alex Nean, 35, was taken into custody on a property on Cabbage Tree Rd at Williamtown about 6.30pm on Thursday night.

The dog squad was called in to assist a search following reports of a man wielding an axe.

Police said emergency services were called to Tomago Rd at Tomago about 3.20pm following reports a sedan and a hatchback had collided.

“Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and were told after the collision the driver of the hatchback had approached the other vehicle, allegedly armed with an axe,” police said in a statement.

“Police were alerted and the armed man ran into nearby bushland. A perimeter was established and assistance sought from the dog unit to search the area.”

Nean was arrested at the Williamtown property more than three hours later.

He was taken to Raymond Terrace police station where he was charged with three outstanding warrants as well as three counts of possess prohibited drug, and trespass.

He faced Raymond Terrace Local Court on Friday where he was not required to enter a plea and did not apply for bail.

Nean was formally remanded in custody to reappear on July 1.

Police said inquiries were continuing “into further charges relating to the crash and alleged road-rage incident”.
