One of the Hunter Valley’s most prestigious wineries is officially on the market, with the sprawling estate including a luxury homestead, function centre and 125 acres of vacant land, ripe for building.
The Leogate Estate, responsible for producing the 5-star James Halliday rated wines served to Qantas First Class guests, was quietly put on the market last week, for the first time in more than 15 years.
Nestled within the Brokenback Range, the property includes a production facility, vineyard, and warehouse along with a tasting room, 110-seat restaurant and function centre.
Also included in the listing is a five bedroom homestead and a nearby four bedroom cottage style guesthouse, along with 125 acres of vacant land, zoned for tourist accommodation.
The current owners, who originally hail from Tamworth, purchased the land from brewing company Resch's after retiring from cattle farming.
Bill Widin, 78, who bought the property with wife Vicki back in 2008, said “the time has come” to pass on the estate.
“I’d like to think that some family would come to be interested in the vineyard and be able to carry on this vision that Vicki and I have had,” Mr Widin said
“We bought the vineyard from Resch's the brewing company, and it was simply a vineyard, with no improvements, everything that’s on the vineyard we built, and we very much enjoyed doing it.”
Selling agent Shelly Jurd, said the listing presented more than just a commercial opportunity, but a “lifestyle” one as well.
“It’s very diverse, we can sell it as a whole or three separate lots, to be readily available in different portions,” she said
Ms Jurd explained the listings could be divided as one lot including the warehouse, winemaking facility, restaurant and function centre, a second lot with the homestead plus a vineyard, and a third lot with a white vineyard covering 27.2 hectares.
Since landing on the market just over a week ago, Ms Jurd said the listing had already “lots of interest” from both wine professionals and investors.
The Australian had previously described Leogate Estate, whose wines are sold in The Australian Wine Club, as “a storied Hunter Valley vineyard that has produced highly rated, award-winning shiraz for decades”.
