A man who died after being found alone in his Lake Macquarie home suffering from multiple stab wounds had been hosting a birthday party in the hours leading up to the discovery.

Police have confirmed on Tuesday – nearly five days after the 37-year-old was found at the Gateshead home by paramedics – that they were treating the death as suspicious following an autopsy on Monday.

In their first public statement on the suspicious death since they were called to Mahogany Cl about 11pm last Thursday, Lake Macquarie police have also confirmed they are being assisted by the state’s homicide squad.

They confirmed Monday’s autopsy had “revealed” that the man sustained multiple stab wounds.

Police have refused to comment at all over the death, including what is believed to have occurred in the lead up to the discovery of the man on January 9, nor information about the birthday party being held at the house for a relative.

It can be revealed that the man was found close to death at the residence and was alone at the home when emergency services arrived.
