A rider is lucky to be alive after a shocking video has emerged which shows a motorbike about to run a red light, before being smashed into by a car and the rider thrown metres into the air at Lake Macquarie.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Oakdale Rd at Gateshead on Friday November 19 at around 2.40pm following a collision between a dirt bike and Hyundai Terracan.
The video posted to social media following the crash shows the rider using the inside/shoulder lane as cars came to a halt at a red light.
Without slowing down, the motorbike proceeded to run the red light, but as it approached was ploughed into by another vehicle about to use a turning side section of the road.
The rider - a 25-year-old man from Belmont South - was flung into the air before coming to a rest on the side of the road.
It was all captured by another driver waiting at the intersection.
The man was treated at the scene for critical injuries before being taken to John Hunter Hospital.
NSW Ambulance confirmed he suffered significant lower leg and pelvic injuries and is in a serious but stable condition.
The driver of the vehicle - a 45-year-old man from Gateshead - was uninjured and taken to Belmont Hospital where he was subject to mandatory testing.
Lake Macquarie Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
