David John Greentree pleads not guilty to alleged sexual assault on Maitland Rd, Islington

A man who denies the alleged sexual assault of a woman as she walked down a suburban street has learnt when he will face an estimated five-day trial.

A Windale man charged over the alleged random sexual assault of a woman on a suburban Newcastle street will face a trial next August.

David John Greentree, 48, faced Newcastle District Court on Thursday where he formally pleaded not guilty to sexual intercourse without consent and recklessly inflict actual bodily harm.

Police allege Greentree attacked a 23-year-old woman on Maitland Rd at Islington about 10.30pm on December 10 last year.

She was bundled into her own car where police allege she was sexually assaulted by Greentree, before a passer-by intervened and chased him away.

Greentree was arrested at a Sandgate business three days later following an investigation by detectives from Newcastle City police district and the child abuse and sex crimes squad.

He faced Newcastle District Court via audio visual link on Thursday where he formally entered the not guilty plea.

The court heard the trial, set to commence on August 28, would have an estimated length of five days.

Greentree did not apply for bail and was formally remanded in custody.
