With four kids at home and twins on the way, Ty Standen was a proud father, excited to meet his new editions.

Wife Corine Lloyd had been ordered to spend most of her pregnancy taking it easy after a cervical cerclage – a cervical stitch – was performed at 16 weeks to ensure her twins were safe and she wouldn’t go into early labour.

But the 40-year-old HR worker from Dudley, in Lake Macquarie, was a picture of health otherwise until things went horribly wrong after she gave birth via c-section at 36 weeks on July 5.

“They took her in, got the babies out and then she had a stroke,” Mr Standen said.

“I was over looking after the babies and then lots of doctors started coming into the room, you could tell something was wrong and they ushered me and the babies out of the room and I didn’t see her for a few hours after that.

“It was very unexpected, she had her blood pressure tested all throughout the pregnancy and there was no issues at all.”

He said the head of anaesthetics gave him a run down of what was happening and that they would do a review.

“We don’t know what caused it or why it occurred,” Mr Standen added.

Ms Lloyd was transferred to Toronto Private for rehabilitation as health experts focused on trying to get her back to normal.

The hospital is not accused of any wrongdoing.

“There’s no indication of whether she’ll get everything back or how long it will take,” Mr Standen said in an emotional interview with the Daily Telegraph.

“She has been improving and is able to do assisted walks, speech is improving out of sight but no arm movement.

“She has been working with OTs everyday because she wants to be home with her twins.”

Meanwhile dad is back and forth to the hospital and now looking after six kids, including his newborn daughter and son, with his wife’s expected long road to recovery.

“I just had to take control and make it work, I can’t not be there for the kids, we are extremely lucky with a tight knit family and plenty of assistance to help us out,” he said.

“I’ve been running out there multiple times with the twins so she can spend as much time with them as possible, can still do feeds and hold them.”

The kids – ages 11, ten, seven and two – are all helping out in their own way.

“The 10 and 11 year old have been great helping out, even the seven year old can play and be with the younger child, we are very lucky we have a big family and everyone chips in,” he explained.

A family friend started a Go Fund Me page to help out the family in their desperate time of need.

“Any funds raised will go towards Ty being able to stay at home longer, and the required modifications to their home in preparation for her returning home,” Teresa and Bill Lloyd said.

“This unexpected and life-altering event has deeply impacted her mobility, speech, and independence, but she’s a fighter, super determined and we believe in her recovery to get home to her family and be able to enjoy such a special time.

“Corine has always been a loving, selfless, and hardworking woman, the kind who puts others before herself and never asks for anything in return. Now, she needs our support more than ever.”

As of Friday morning $18k had been raised of their $20k target.

“Corine didn’t expect that at all which is fantastic, blown away by the support received. Also coming home everyday and food sitting on my porch from neighbours,” Mr Standen said.

“We’re holding onto hope and taking this journey one day at a time. We are hopeful for brighter days ahead,” Mr and Mrs Lloyd said.
