Convicted murderer and apparent Muay Thai kickboxing specialist Sayle Newson suffered multiple facial fractures in a jail bashing caught on security cameras just days after he was convicted of killing girlfriend Carly McBride.

Newson, who was found guilty of murdering Ms McBride and dumping her body in bushland next to an Upper Hunter road, was attacked inside Shortland Correctional Centre at Cessnock on June 28, 2021.

And the exact details of the assault - which saw the 46-year-old hospitalised for almost a week with multiple facial fractures - were revealed on Wednesday when one of the players admitted to his role in the assault.

Armidale man Christopher Dale Williams, 33, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm after prosecutors dropped more serious charge including reckless wounding.

Agreed facts tendered in Newcastle Local Court said Williams walked into Newson’s cell in Block F with two other inmates about 8.40am.

The facts said the trio were attempting to “stand over” or threaten and intimidate Newson.

But as the trio left the cell, and were followed by bloodied Newson, a brawl erupted between one of the other men and the convicted killer.

Williams watched on as the other inmate viciously punched Newson as the pair shaped up to each other.

A series of confrontations continued before Newson ran off.

Newson was taken to Maitland Hospital before being transported to John Hunter Hospital where two facial fractures required “surgical intervention” and a third break required the insertion of plates.

Newson and Williams both refused to give a statement to authorities.

Williams was charged as being part of a joint criminal enterprise.

A third man, who entered Newson’s cell before returning down a set of stairs to watch on, has also pleaded guilty.

Newson was sentenced to a maximum 27 years and a non-parole period of 19 years and nine months for murdering Ms McBride in 2014.
