Police allege a teenager driver was performing a burnout moments before he hit a skateboarder during a bizarre night-time incident in an inner-city Newcastle park.
Emergency services were called to Nesca Park off Grensplope St, Bar Beach, about 9pm on Friday following reports that a man had been hit by a ute.
“At the scene, police were told that a man was skateboarding on the park grounds before he was hit by a vehicle which allegedly left the scene,” police said in a statement.
“The skateboarder, a 54-year-old man, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.”
Hunter crash investigation unit officers, assisted Newcastle City police, established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the incident.
Following a search of the local area, police located and seized a Nissan Navara.
A man, 18, was arrested at Newcastle police station about 11am on Saturday and later charged with driving recklessly, furiously or dangerously, operating a vehicle so as to cause a loss of traction, and destroying or damaging property.
He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on July 11.
