A Lake Macquarie couple were a third of their way into a 390km trip to steal cash from inside the luxury $1.5m home of a well-known north coast family when they were dramatically arrested by heavily-armed police at a small town service station, court documents state.
Bradley Robert Scott, 37, and Amy Lee Matthews, 3o, were taken into custody by officers from the crack tactical operations unit in the carpark of the Ampol service station at Coolongolook about 11.25pm on April 20.
Police said they allegedly seized “a number of housebreaking implements” during a search of the two cars after the pair had travelled separately.
Matthews was allegedly in possession of a small quantity of methamphetamine, a knife, and a face covering, while Scott was allegedly in possession of an amount of cocaine and methamphetamine.
Police also allegedly recovered a Colt .45 pistol as part of the investigation under Strike Force Rubus, which police said was established to “investigate a number of serious offences in the state’s north.”
The pair, from the same Edgeworth address according to court documents, were later charged with a range of offences including conspiring to commit the aggravated break and enter on the luxury Coffs Harbour residence to steal an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police allege the pair had left Edgeworth in separate cars and had travelled 130km to the popular but remote Pacific Highway service station on their 390km journey to Coffs Harbour when police swooped.
NewsLocal has decided not to identify the alleged targeted property or its occupants.
Scott is also facing a series of firearms charges, including possessing a Colt .45 pistol at Edgeworth without a licence or permit and supplying a Colt .45 pistol at Eagleton, between Raymond Terrace and Karuah, on the night of his arrest.
He also facing one count each of acquiring a pistol subject to a firearm prohibition order, deemed supply of cocaine and methamphetamine and disqualified driving.
Matthews faces the conspiracy charge, carrying a knife in a public place and possessing methamphetamine.
The pair had their cases briefly mentioned in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, where unrelated charges against Matthews were also raised.
They included robbery in company causing wounding or grievous bodily harm, which is alleged to have occurred at Cardiff on July 25 last year and using, possessing or attempting/threatening to use an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention or apprehension.
Both Scott and Matthews have not been required to enter pleas and did not apply for bail.
They will reappear in Newcastle Local Court on June 26.
