Police are investigating whether a former Comanchero’s history in bikie gangs is connected to his car being targeted with at least two crude bombs on a quiet suburban street.
The former bikie, who was the victim of an unsolved arson attack more than six years ago, is believed to have now become the target of the carbombing at Rutherford last month.
Criminal Group Squad detectives have taken over the investigation from Port Stephens-Hunter investigators and are now appealing for public assistance to help solve the attack.
At least two bombs were placed under a Chrysler owned by the former Comanchero while it was parked on Avery St sometime on October 27.
It is suspected the incendiary bombs may have been lit moments before a loud explosion was heard about 8.30pm.
Despite the massive bang, only a small fire broke out at the back of the sedan and was quickly extinguished.
No one was injured.
A crime scene was established and the car was seized for forensic examination.
But it is the motive and threat of carnage which has concerned police.
Investigators would not elaborate on a possible motive other than to say that it was “believed a number of people involved are linked to outlaw motorcycle groups”.
Though it is understood one firm line of inquiry is whether the alleged victim’s history with the Comanchero has made him the target.
Strike Force Ucles has been established to investigate the carbombing.
A full canvass of Avery St and several blocks surrounding the bombing have been made as part of the investigation.
