SUMMER is heating up and Turramurra's Angus Thomspon is already making a splash, with the 16-year-old earning selection in the Canoe Slalom National Talent Squad.
"It's my third time selected in the squad," he said.
"It's great because it means I get more training and there are about five training camps around Australia throughout the year."
Angus picked up a gold medal in the Under-16 men's K1 event at the national canoe and kayak slalom championships earlier this month in Victoria.
The St Ignatius student isn't about to rest on these results and with important selections on the horizon he is gearing to finish off what he's started in the coming weeks.
"We have the second-half of junior World's selections in late February," he said.
"The selections are done on a point system and I'm fourth down at the moment on that list, and the top three get selected."
Needless to say he will be doing his best to secure some important points.
But the local youngster also enjoys the team-aspect of the sport.
He teamed up with Lachlan Croft to secure bronze in the Under-16 men's C2 event at the recent nationals, saying that while individual racing is fun he likes the teamwork involved in the C2.
With plenty of juniors stepping up as part of the recent Australian Youth Olympic Festival, Angus paddled as part of a demonstration event during the competition in Penrith.
"They asked me to do the demo run, so people could watch and see how it's done," he said.
