WHEN Madelyn ‘Maddy’ Hagerty picks up a club, she becomes the focused player who has moved into the top rung of junior Australian golfers.
It has makes a lot of sense why her family moved to Colebee to be around the Greg Norman-designed Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club.
Now the 15-year-old’s decision to concentrate on golf instead of football has seen her being picked for the NSW team for the 2016 under-15 Australian schools championships in November, one of the biggest events for the year.
This week’s nominee for the Junior Sports Star Awards is overall runner-up and year 9 winner of the JNJG NSW All School Junior Championship (Jack Newton Shield).
Maddy, who attends St John Paull II Catholic College, said she just cannot get enough of golf.
“I first began playing when I was eight and then competitively for the past three years,” Maddy said.
“I like golf compared to soccer because it’s something that I can do all year round and it’s a bit more calm than soccer while still being competitive.
“My main goals for this season would be to get my handicap down to five or better and become a more consistent golfer and start shooting lower scores.”
Maddy has bagged the Junior of the Year award at the Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club for two years-in-a-row and was a member of the winning team at the Clubs NSW Academy Games in April in addition to being the girls nett runner-up there.
Her main motivation is to reduce her handicap and practices around eight hours a week, with her long game being her strong point at the moment.
“Whenever I have a good round, it motivates me to keep doing whatever I’m doing to make me play well,” Maddy said.
“My biggest asset is probably my long game and if I am going to reach the top, I need to improve my short game and my mental game.”
