East Coast Eagles invited to join Sydney Women’s Premier Division

After two years playing division one footy, the East Coast Eagles’ women’s program has been invited to join the top-tier Sydney Women’s Premier Division AFL competition for 2019

In JUST their third year, the East Coast Eagles Australian Rules Football Club’s women’s team has been invited to join Sydney’s top-tier women’s competition.

After spending two years playing division one football, the “Eagals” will pit themselves against the city’s very best female Aussie rules players as they step up into the elite Sydney Women’s Premier Division for the 2019 season.

“The Eagles have set up a thriving female football program in the fast growing north west region of Sydney,” AFL Sydney’s community football manager Lauren Bunting said.

“With strong local connections and clear pathways from junior to senior football and an extremely strong coaching and executive group, they will continue to drive their female football program to the next level.”

East Coast Eagles president Jon Gawley said the success of the women’s program had surpassed all expectations.

The club is hopeful that the step-up might lead to eventual AFLW success for the Eagles players.

“We had a feeling this would take off, however the way our women have embraced football — the culture has been unbelievable,” he said.

“Entering the premier division gives the women’s team an added incentive and it gives our elite players, we have a few involved with the GWS Giants, an important next step … It also gives the elite juniors a pathway which is very important.

“We had an elite men’s program — now we have a complete women’s program.”
