STUDENTS  from local schools will today host the first ever Youth Leading the World community forum in the Hornsby shire.

The forum, which is being held in the Normanhurst Boys’ High School hall, will give community leaders like Hornsby Mayor Steve Russell an opportunity to find out what local students are passionate about.

Forum facilitator Karen Cortez said 26 students from six schools — Loreto Normanhurst, Normanhurst Boys’ High, Hornsby Girls’ High, Gilroy Catholic College, Epping Boys’ High and Baulkham Hills High — attended two days of workshops in the holidays to come up with environmentally focused action plans to present at the forum.

“Our action plan ideas include topics such as digitising school resources, starting a nude food canteen chain and even contacting the Board of Studies regarding prospective additions to the Geography and Science stage 4 and 5 curriculums,” said Karen, a student at Hornsby Girls’ High.

“I’m excited to be a part of the first Hornsby forum.

“The quality of the participants is high — passionate individuals with ideas and highly developed organisational skills.”

Gilroy Catholic College student Chris Callan said his group was keen to progress.

“Knowing we may encourage some council members to aid our initiatives is also very exciting,” he said.
