ROUSE Hill’s champion hammer throw Alex Hulley was edged out for the gold at the World Youth Olympic Games at Nanjing, China, on Sunday evening.
The 17-year-old was leading the competition with her third throw of 68.35 metres but her Chinese rival Xinying Xu then threw the identical distance.
On countback, the judges awarded Xu the gold as her first throw of 67.70m was better than the 66.81m Hulley hurled in her second effort.
Despite the disappointment, Hulley, the 2013 Rouse Hill Times Junior Sports Star, was, however, delighted with her silver.
“I’m stoked with the outcome, I don’t care that it wasn’t my best throw, it’s still amazing,” said Hulley, who fouled her fourth throw. “I know I lost on countback, but I’m so happy to win a medal I don’t care.
“The competition was great, there were some great throwers out there.” . . . I’m happy.”
Hulley had bettered her PB in the qualifying rounds with a massive throw of 70.87m to head the list of finalists. She will be pleased her decision to say no to a possible Commonwealth Games spot has been vindicated with a top performance at the Nanjing Games.
Hulley had an ideal lead up to the Games, winning an important under-18 competition at the Gold Coast in July.
“I’ve done so many PB’s leading up to it, every comp has just been great,” she said.
“I’ve really focused on my training this year, I started training four times per week constantly. I guess I know what works now.”
Last year, Hulley finished ninth at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ukraine.
