Grace Kim is a girl whose star is certainly on the rise in the golfing world.
The 16-year-old from Greenacre last month won one of Australia’s most prestigious junior golf championships — the Greg Norman Junior Masters on the Gold Coast.
Kim, a member of Avondale Golf Club, shot rounds of 75,72,71 and 75 for a five-over par total of 293 to win the title by a shot from Min Kweon of Sanctuary Cove.
Previous winners of the tournament include current LPGA star Minjee Lee, and Karrie Webb, who is regarded by many as one of Australia’s greatest ever female golfers.
“Winning the Greg Norman Junior Masters in Queensland is my biggest result so far,” Kim said. “I came second in a few tournaments before that, so I knew I was getting close, I was so happy to win.”
Besides picking up her first major trophy in 2016, Kim also collected the Golf NSW Jean Derrin Trophy, awarded to the female with the lowest scoring average across a series of tournaments in NSW for the year, with a scoring average of 69.80 from 13 rounds.
“I was happy with how I played last year, I improved a lot. I had a few up and downs, but it was still a good year,” she said.
Kim’s great form in 2016 is continuing into 2017 — last Friday she won the Victorian Junior Masters by four shots.
Next up for Kim is the Australian Women’s Amateur Championship at Yarra Yarra Golf Club.
After that, it’s Avondale Women’s Amateur and finally the NSW Women’s Amateur Championship at Terrey Hills and Killara Golf Clubs.
“I’m hoping to make the match play rounds at the Australian Amateur. If I play the best that I can, I can get there,” Kim said.
Kim is optimistic that her consistency throughout 2016 will result in state team selection this year.
“One of my goals is to make the NSW Junior Girls team and be selected in the Golf NSW high performance squad as well,” she said.
