On grand final day the under 13s Bankstown Sports Hockey Club side went into the match as underdogs — but they came out on top, largely thanks to Matthew Thompson.
The 13-year-old from Padstow scored all three of the team’s goals to win the trophy and defeat Sutherland 3-2.
“When we scored the first goal, the other team was a bit shocked,” Matthew said.
“It was amazing we didn’t really expect it, they were the favourites.”
Matthew was named player of the match in the grand final, but was quick to shrug off his goalscoring efforts.
“It was good, but they all require team work, it’s a whole team effort,” he said.
The young player only picked up a hockey stick for the first time last year, but is already one of the highest goal scorers, with 25 to his name this season.
While the hockey season has wrapped up for the year, Bankstown Sports Hockey Club will run a summer competition from October 18. For details, email: summer hockey@bankstownhockey .org.au.
Matthew is The Express’ latest nominee for the Junior Sports Star award, sponsored by Rebel. The other categories are Team Spirit, sponsored by SportsTG, Service to Sport and Young Sporting Spirit, sponsored by Simonds Homes.
This September, anyone who nominates will go into the draw to win 1 of 4 $100 rebel gift cards.
