AT 21, Emma Newman knows she’s a “cricket tragic,” but she’s hoping to use her passion for the game to inspire the generation of female cricketers.
The Bankstown District Cricket Association player recently took out one of the top gongs at the Sports NSW awards, named young coach of the year.
Newman has been coaching for three seasons, and it’s no surprise her teams have reaped results.
Last year, she helped guide the U13 Thunder girls cricket league team to premierships in both their spring and summer competitions.
“I’m trying to give them the passion I have for cricket and teach them to enjoy the game, so hopefully they’ll keep playing,” she said.
While she thrives in her coaching role, Newman admitted it’s on the pitch where she finds most joy.
“Playing is my passion, but it’s good to give back to the club who have been so good to me over the past 11 years,” she said.
The medium pace bowler plays for Bankstown Sports women’s cricket division one team.
Last year, she took the honour of being leading wicket taker for the side and hopes to “one day” play in the Women’s Big Bash League.
Newman is The Express’s latest nominee in the Junior Sports Star Awards category Service to Sport, sponsored by Simonds Homes. The other categories are Junior Sports Star, sponsored by Rebel, Seam Spirit, sponsored by Fox Sports Pulse and Young Sporting Spirit, sponsored by Simonds Homes.
