The southwest’s largest disability expo is hoping to help people navigate the “new world” of the NDIS and connect people with services.
This Saturday and Synday Liverpool’s Whitlam Leisure Centre will host the South West Disability Expo — a two-day event that is expected to draw more than 3000 people.
In the southwest, 63,000 people live with disabilities and the expo aims to connect these people with more than 120 exhibitors showcasing the latest assistive technology and introduce them to government agencies, advocacy groups and service providers.
Australian entertainer Tim Ferguson, who lives with multiple sclerosis, will launch the event that is being run by 4Community, in conjunction with Canterbury-Bankstown, Fairfield and Liverpool councils.
“The aim of the exhibition is to ensure that people with a disability, their families and their carers have access to up-to-date relevant information,” 4Community’s Kathryn Carey said.
“We’re hoping people come away with the information they need so they are connected to the services and products needed to meet their care.”
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller will host the event and NDIS director of engagement Mary Hawkins will also speak.
Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said the expo answered a need in the community, especially with the NDIS being rolled out across NSW.
“It’s important for our community to know what products and services are available to them,” he said.
“We’re proud to support an event that connects people with disability ... to opportunities and different types of support.”
