An alleged serial baby formula thief accused of ransacking more than $6000 worth of baby formula from Coles supermarkets as part of a sophisticated criminal sting was serving a jail sentence at the time of the offending.
Police say single mum Sarah Hemmings, of Brighton Le Sands, repeatedly loaded up on hundreds of dollars worth of baby formula at Coles supermarkets in Zetland, Brighton Le Sands, Campsie and Revesby across a ten-week period.
It was revealed in court the 28-year-old woman was serving an Intensive Correction Order, a jail sentence served in the community, during the period she is accused of stealing $6800 worth of baby formula and other goods.
Police allege she was a member of a criminal syndicate which raided supermarkets for baby formula before selling it.
Small business owner Tram Huyn Bao Phan, 41, was arrested at her Bankstown shop last month before being charged with 10 offences, including receiving stolen goods and dealing with the property proceeds of crime. No plea has been entered and she remains before the courts.
A 45-year-old man, Curistos Filippopoulos, was also arrested and accused of stealing baby formula. He also remains before the courts.
The court heard Hemmings is on the waiting list for a rehabilitation facility for drug-related issues and had allegedly made admissions to the larceny offences following her arrest.
Her application for bail was refused by Magistrate Ian Guy, noting the case against her appeared “very strong” and that there was a “huge” risk she would reoffend.
The matter will return before Bankstown Local Court on July 6.
