Police warning as man is charged for falsely claiming he was carjacked

Police have arrested a man who they allege falsely claimed he had been carjacked at gunpoint at Lakemba.

Campsie Police are warning that those who make false charges are committing a criminal offence after charging a man for allegedly fabricating a report about being carjacked at gunpoint in Lakemba.

The 32-year-old Lakemba man was arrested on Monday and charged with dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception, and two counts of make false accusation with intent subject other to investigation.

Campsie Police Crime Manager Chief Inspector Paul Albury told The Express they had been investigating the Monday, July 15 incident where the male reported he was outside an address on Garrong Rd, Lakemba, when he was approached by two males and threatened with a firearm.

“If you make a report to the police which turns out to be false, it is a criminal offence,” Chief Inspector Albury said.

“It is a waste of significant time which takes police away from other investigations and potentially places others in the community at risk.”

Police allege the man had claimed the men demanded the keys to his 2016-model silver Toyota Camry, before one of the men left in the vehicle. Police were told the other man left in a red-coloured sedan.

The following day, the man contacted police to inform them he had located the Toyota parked in Monterey St, Granville South.

Officers went to the place and spotted the vehicle and a second car, a small red sedan, parked at the location.

Police spoke to three men who were then arrested and taken to Granville Police Station for questioning. They were later released pending further inquiries.

Following further investigation, about 7pm on Monday, police arrested the 32-year-old at Campsie Police Station.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Tuesday, August 6.
