AN EX-MILITARY fighter jet slid off the runway and onto the grass while trying to take off at Bankstown Airport this afternoon.
Seven Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Liverpool, Guildford, Bankstown, Revesby and Chester Hill, headed to the airport, responding to reports of an aviation emergency about 3.30pm.
The jet, understood to be a decommissioned MiG fighter used for joy flights, failed to take off and slid off the runway, coming to rest on the grass.
The 51-year-old male pilot, and his passenger, a 28-year-old woman were not injured and got out of the plane safely.
A FRNSW spokeswoman said there was a fuel spill and firefighters used foam and were trying to decamp the fuel from the aircraft.
NSW Police said the incident had been referred to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
