Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Education Minister Rob Stokes made the announcement at Picnic Point last Wednesday.

“The best measure of effective education is how student results improve over time, and that is why NAPLAN is such an important diagnostic tool for schools and families,” Mr Scott said.

Canterbury Girls High saw significant improvements in its year 9 pupils’ reading results, compared with when they first started school in year 7.

Picnic Point High was recognised for achieving in numeracy.

The school made substantial gains, with 82.5 per cent of students achieving greater or equal to expected growth from years 7 to 9.

For spelling, Picnic Point had 31 per cent of its year 9 students achieving a Band 9 or 10, compared to the Australian average of just 23 per cent.

Principal Sharon Byron said there was nothing radical behind the progress, just hard work.

“It’s just a whole school approach delivered by committed teachers who are ensuring that explicit strategies are part of regular day to day teaching,” Ms Byron said.
