Parry Park gets big facelift as council revs up development

LAKEMBA’S popular Parry Park will be beautified and enhanced while the rest of the Canterbury Bankstown LGA is not ignored.

CANTERBURY Bankstown Council plans to spend $36 million on 182 road and transport projects over the next year, according to the draft 2018-19 plan.

The council’s draft plan has nearly $88 million worth of projects — $15 million more than when compared to the previous period.

The council said it is the first time, since amalgamation of Canterbury and Bankstown councils, that a draft budget will be linked to the 10-year Community Strategic Plan.

“We want to be prosperous and innovative, moving and integrated, safe and strong, liveable and distinctive, healthy and active, and clean and green,” Mayor Khal Asfour said.

Meanwhile, the council will provide a welcome facelift for Lakemba’s much-loved Parry Park.

A creek, new playground, picnic area, extra walking and cycling paths in addition to exercise facilities will be provided to make much better.

The Canterbury Bankstown Council approved the masterplan at last Tuesday’s meeting.

According to the plans, the first stage will feature a creek flowing through the park, a new children’s playground, renovating the sports field and upgrading Koala Rd, Lakemba.

When completed, the park will be able to handle as many as 30,000 visitors.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the project was long overdue and there was no better time to undertake a project of this magnitude.

“As we’re infinitely aware by now, our city is lacking in open space,” Cr Asfour said.

“Our Canterbury open space strategy and needs review identified a significant gap in open space in Lakemba, and also recognised the potential for the park to be a major recreation destination and sports hub, which is exactly what it will be once we’re done.”

The draft 2018/19 plan includes:

● $36.2 million for 182 separate road and transport projects, including Koala Rd, Chapel Rd, Croydon St and Noble Ave.

● $16.6 million for parks and a sport and recreational program, including new sport and recreation facilities at Wagener Oval, new surfaces at Amour Park, Waterworth Park and Parry Park, construction of a new synthetic playing field at Jensen Park.

● $10.7 million for the design and construction of community buildings.

● $3 million for environmental works, including investing in a litter collection device at the Cooks River.

● $7.3 million for upgrades to bridges, pathways and boardwalks at sites, including Hector St and Wolumba St, Chester Hill.

● $7 million for works to commence on the upgrades to Canterbury and Revesby Town Centres.

● $1.5 million to reconstruct the Canterbury Rd underpass, and
