WALKING into the bush with little more than your dog and the clothes on your back sounds utterly crazy.
But childhood friends Billy Volonakis and Chris Sperilakis, are not mad, they’re just mates on a mission.
Next month the men and their dogs will trek for three days in NSW’s Central West Tablelands to raise awareness and funds for the Sanfilippo Children’s Foundation.
In their backpacks will be three protein bars — enough for one a day — a bladder pack with limited water, some pots, knives, a GPS and a hoochie tent.
The 28-year-olds are both keen hunters, who already source all their meat from hunting, rarely going to a supermarket and they will be taking rifles with them.
But this is the first time they have attempted to source their own food and water on an overnight trip.
“We’ve always taken a car so can take whatever we want with us. This whole experience will be about learning to live on the land,” Roselands resident Mr Volonakis said.
“I’m excited, not nervous yet just feeling confident. My main concern is if one of us gets hurt, then the other will have to get help.”
The pair have set up an online fundraiser to raise money for people living with Sanfilippo — a rare genetic condition that causes fatal brain damage.
There is currently no treatment or cure available for the disease.
