A new outreach centre in Canterbury will provide free community-based treatment for people suffering from addiction and mental illness.

Renowned residential rehabilitation service Odyssey House has now opened Community Services Central and Eastern Sydney.

Funded by an $868,000 two-year grant through Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network, Odyssey House can now help people overcome drug dependence, manage their mental illness, prevent relapse and access support while going about their daily lives in the community.

Odyssey House Community Services manager central eastern and southwest Sydney regions Michelle Tziarkas said the Odyssey House hub in Redfern and new Canterbury site were now open, and there are plans to expand into Botany, Mascot, La Perouse and Eastgardens. It is estimated this will help 60 to 80 people a month.

“Qualified psychologists and counsellors support people to take one step at a time, at their own pace,” Ms Tziarkas said. “Day-based therapies may better suit people who are working, caring for family or studying, who need early intervention so serious addiction or mental illness doesn’t set in, or who need support or relapse prevention after treatment or a custodial sentence.

Odyssey House’s Canterbury outreach centre is at 3/190-192 Canterbury Rd and is open Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 8.30am-4.30pm.

Staff will provide individual and group counselling and education focusing on alcohol and other drugs, and mental-health recovery. There are also specialised groups for indigenous people, family and parenting, anger management and people released from custody.

The services are free to Canterbury-Bankstown residents.
