A NSW Government report has revealed that the Sydenham to Bankstown Corridor could “feasibly” accommodate nearly 60,000 homes, which is 25,000 more than originally planned.

In the revised Sydenham to Bankstown Urban Renewal Strategy, the State Government has earmarked the 13.5km corridor for 35,000 dwellings to be delivered over the next 20 years.

But a 2016 AEC Group report, commissioned by the State Government, shows the feasible dwellings for the corridor is 58,747.

The study suggests that a theoretical 91,000 could be squeezed into the corridor by 2036 — but the report states that “not all development opportunities are financially feasible to pursue”.

The Department of Planning says the figures are just forecasts and not a projection of what is to come.

“The 20-year vision for the Sydenham to Bankstown corridor plans for more than 35,400 new homes and 8700 new jobs,” a spokesman for the department said.

“This is based on potential planning capacity minus what is economically feasible. It is not a strategy to support 90,000 homes as has been misreported.”

But local MPs were sceptical.

“This consultant’s report has exposed the Liberals’ true agenda with the Metro — which is to squeeze in as many units as possible into Bankstown,” Bankstown state Labor MP Tania Mihailuk said.

Canterbury state Labor MP Sophie Cotsis said the report undermines all of the Government’s consultation: “The community has lost all confidence that the Government’s planning for our suburbs is anything other than a land-grab for developers,” Ms Cotsis said.

“This report undermines community consultation on the plans, as does the release of the EIS for the Sydney Metro only weeks after the Government closed submissions on the rezoning.”
