My Kitchen Rules team Betty and David make western Sydney proud despite disaster dessert

BETTY Banks and David Vu made western Sydney proud on My Kitchen Rules with their instant restaurant. But what dish scored them just one point?

Betty Banks and David Vu made western Sydney proud on My Kitchen Rules last night as the second team to debut their instant — and very Instagramable — restaurant.

The team said their aim was to “hustle” and they lived up to the promise, delivering two standout dishes but a less than perfect dessert.

“We’re in Punchy,” South Australia mates Tim and Kyle quipped as the teams headed to David’s home turf, Punchbowl.

Betty and David said their instant restaurant, Anchor and Palms, was named after their sentimental tattoos on their arms. Their dining spot was decked out with floral centrepieces and black and white photo tributes to their migrant parents (David’s Vietnamese mother and father spent time in a refugee camp, while Betty’s mother hails from Laos).

For entrée, the pair served up crispy pork belly with a steamed bun and pickled cucumber, nailing the crunch and balance of flavours but not quite capturing the fluffy texture of the buns.

Social media influencer Betty was sure to snap a selfie while juggling the cooking.

Next up was the main: Barramundi in a sweet and sour broth with ochre, a beloved recipe from Betty’s mother. Pete Evans said the menu item “ticks all the boxes for me,” and the team’s last minute salvaging of the broth secured them a second stellar dish.

Betty and David’s dessert, featuring on-trend ingredient matcha (ground green tea) polarised the other teams, including tough critic Tyson from Brisbane. The matcha filling in the chocolate glazed doughnuts was a little matcha, and the affogato on the side looked more like a gooey lime milkshake then a 10/10 dessert.

Scoring just two points from Manu and one measly point from Pete plummeted Betty and David’s overall score down and put the team in second place on the leaderboard. But the duo insist they’re still “in it to win it” in the competition.
