Fancy buying for real estate, hotels, parks, streets and iconic landmarks in Canterbury Bankstown?
Canterbury Bankstown Council is rolling out a limited edition of its special Monopoly game featuring between 20-30 well known landmarks and streets, to be suggested by the community.
Councillor Steve Tuntevski is behind the feel good motion which was approved by the council and says it is time the city had its own Monopoly game.
Cr Tuntevski said there were many amazing places for inclusion in the board game, including iconic landmarks including the Bankstown water tank, the Meccano set traffic lights and Bankstown Airport. His motion at the last meeting was supported by councillor Linda Downey.
“It will immortalise our great city,” he said.
“I have been toying with the idea for a couple of years because we have a great city and also the largest, population-wise in NSW,” Cr Tuntevski told The Express.
“We have so much great things and places to be proud of in our city and this is a good way to engage community who can put forward their ideas.
“This will be at no cost to the ratepayers and will be a limited edition.
“The games should be on sale before the end of the year making it a lovely Christmas gift.”
Mayor Khal Asfour, who said he was “100 per cent behind this great idea,” pointed out that Belmore Sportsground, Georges River National Park, Canterbury Hospital are well known, specially to those who have grown in the area.
The Humans of Bankstown, which has a massive following on Facebook, wants their page to be on the game.
“It would be pretty awesome, reason being many people in the community follow the page and many residents send us videos and images of things going on in the area,” Humans of Bankstown administrator said.
“Definitely we should have the bridge underpass with the train tracks on top, where every truck smacks into (at Bankstown).”
Mayor Asfour fully backed the idea, saying he will be purchasing one to play with his family and friends.
“Monopoly is game based in England, mainly London, but we can now have Canterbury Bankstown areas and landmarks,” Cr Asfour said.
“Some councils, including Mosman and Camden, also have their version of Monopoly,”
“This is a great idea and already there is a strong commitment from many people who said they want to buy it.
“Residents will be able to submit their suggestions for the game which will be a lot of fun.
“This is not a money-making exercise and we will be selling it for the same price that Hasbro will be charging us for it.
“This is a positive thing for our community and there are many people who would want to buy it.
“I myself cannot wait to buy it and play with my children, family and friends.”
Last year, Camden Council made 2000 copies of their Monopoly game, each costing $60 — which were sold out in less than a week.
A Canterbury Bankstown spokeswoman said they will be shortly releasing details about how to get involved and purchase the games.
Monopoly — which started in 1935 — is a board game made by Hasbro.
